Syrah

Explore the characteristics and regions associated with Syrah.

Syrah is the workhorse of the Rhone Valley in France. Syrah is the sole variety used in northern Rhône wines and is the primary grape used in most southern Rhône blends. The grape is called Shiraz in Australia and South Africa and by some U.S. winemakers. Syrah’s thick skin produces a dark, deep violet-colored wine. Cool climate Syrah tends to display rustic earth, meat, leather and spice flavors, while warm climate Syrah is typically very soft, smooth and supple with concentrated black fruit flavors. California and Washington are Syrah leaders. Oregon and Idaho have also seen some success.
