Horse Heaven Hills, officially recognized as an AVA in 2005, is located in the Columbia Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) and is bordered to the north by the Yakima Valley and to the south by the Columbia River. Most vineyards are planted on south sloping hills comprised of well-drained silt and loam soil. Horse Heaven Hills produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Similar to the Red Mountain area located directly to the north, Horse Heaven Hills’ grapes result in some of the best red Bordeaux blends made in the U.S. Top vineyards include Alder Ridge, Canoe Ridge, and Champoux.
