The Monterey AVA is a mixed climate region heavily influenced by the cool Monterey Bay breezes that transit through the 80-mile Salinas Valley. The northern portion of the AVA is cooler due to its proximity to the bay and is planted with cool climate grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Blanc. The warmer southern part of the AVA is primary planted with warm weather varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel.
