Howell Mountain is the most northeastern mountain AVA in Napa County with elevations of 1400 to 2200 feet. The mountain climate is similar to Spring Mountain on the opposite side of the valley, but is slightly warmer due to increased exposure to afternoon sun. In addition to excellent Cabernet, Howell Mountain grapes are used to produce award-wining Zinfandel and Merlot. Howell Mountain reds are typically tannic and full-bodied, with rich mineral, cassis, spice, black currant, and cherry flavors. Howell Mountain has a couple dozen wineries, about a third of which are open for tasting. Make sure to call ahead, nearly all Howell Mountain wineries require appointments.
