The Fort Ross-Seaview American Viticultural Area (AVA), established in 2011, lies entirely within the larger Sonoma Coast AVA. Rising above the coast at elevations ranging from 920 to 1,800 feet, the AVA stays well above most fog, allowing grapes to receive plenty of sunlight while enjoying mild coastal temperatures. The Fort Ross-Seaview AVA has steep terrain as opposed to the rolling hills associated with coastal California, and its boundaries run from a few miles east of the city of Fort Ross to the border between Sonoma and Napa counties. The Fort Ross-Seaview AVA is home to several wineries and vineyards growing a diverse selection of mostly cool-climate grapes. Wineries in the new AVA can now list Fort Ross-Seaview on their labels, though many wineries will likely continue to use the more well known Sonoma Coast labeling.
