Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail
The Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail connects wineries across Central Pennsylvania along the Susquehanna and Juniata rivers, with small-town tasting rooms and countryside drives.
The Susquehanna Heartland Wine Trail connects wineries across Central Pennsylvania along the Susquehanna and Juniata rivers. Its footprint stretches from the State College area through the Juniata and Susquehanna river valleys to communities around Halifax and Hegins. Think countryside drives and small-town detours, not a walkable tasting district: the best plan is to explore one part of the trail rather than chase the whole map.
How to plan your tasting day
Plan on two or three winery visits in a day, grouped geographically, with time for lunch. That is a suggested pace, not a trail requirement. Stops spread across different valleys can turn an ambitious tasting schedule into an afternoon behind the wheel. Map the actual driving route before choosing your reservations, and leave room to browse a town or linger over a tasting.
The wine selection gives mixed-preference groups room to experiment, with varieties including Riesling, Chardonnay, Chambourcin and Traminette. Ask each tasting room which wines are dry and which lean sweet; the grape name alone will not settle that question. This is a good trip for discovering what you like, rather than ordering what you think you should.
Where to stay
- State College: A practical base for exploring the western side of the trail around Centre Hall and Spring Mills.
- Lewistown: A useful choice for a Juniata Valley itinerary taking in the surrounding countryside near Belleville, Granville and Mifflin.
- Lewisburg: A good starting point for the Susquehanna River Valley side, including drives toward Middleburg.
Some trail wineries also offer overnight lodging, worth considering if you would rather make a winery stay part of the weekend. Check room availability separately from tasting arrangements.
When to go and what to check
Summer is a good choice if you want to build your visit around Stars, Stripes & Vines, a seasonal event with wines and special offerings at participating wineries. The trail promotes an event passport; check the current participation details before planning your route. Groups of eight or more visiting during this event are asked to call wineries ahead.
A Heartland Christmas provides a holiday-season reason to visit, also with a passport program. Confirm the current schedule and passport terms before booking. For an independent trip, check individual winery websites for opening hours, tasting arrangements and local events. Choose a designated driver before setting out; the trail also lists limousine services for visitors who want someone else to handle the driving.
