Hawstone Hollow Winery
Small-batch fruit wines and bourbon-barrel port-style wine in Lewistown, Pennsylvania
Best known for: Small-batch fruit wines and bourbon-barrel-aged port-style red
Hawstone Hollow Winery in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, pairs small-batch fruit wines with locally themed reds and a tasting room built for lingering. Owners Pat and Ali Naylor divide the work: Pat makes the wine, while Ali manages the business and tasting room. There is no estate vineyard here. Instead, the winery sources grapes and other fruit, makes its wines in-house, and uses real fruit rather than artificial flavoring.
The range gives sweet-wine fans plenty to explore without leaving dry-red drinkers stranded. Red Raspberry is made entirely from raspberries, while Railroad Red uses Pennsylvania-grown grapes for a dry red whose label features Lewistown’s historic train station. Fort Granville takes a different turn: a semi-sweet, fortified, port-style red aged in a bourbon barrel. The Hawstone Cooler, a grape-wine blend at 6% alcohol, is available on tap, alongside seasonal flavors.
The Hawstone Lounge has wine-barrel tables, a fireplace, cathedral-height ceilings, and Ali’s artwork on display. A flight board is designed for two, with six self-selected tastings per person. For a livelier outing, the Coliseum sits about 100 yards from the winery, hosting live music with food vendors, a wine shack, and room for lawn chairs.
