Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail
The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail connects wineries in southwest Michigan, from New Buffalo to Saugatuck and east to Kalamazoo, with vineyard visits and tasting rooms in lakeshore towns.
The Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail connects wineries in southwest Michigan’s Lake Michigan Shore AVA, a federally designated wine-growing region, with visits spread from New Buffalo to Saugatuck and east to Kalamazoo. Think of it as a region to explore over a weekend, not a single road to follow from end to end.
Locally grown grapes are the common thread. Lake Michigan softens winter and spring cold and stretches the growing season into fall, helping explain why vineyards thrive in this corner of Michigan. For visitors, the appeal is the choice between heading into vineyard country and dropping into a tasting room while exploring a lakeshore town. You can make wine the main event without making it the entire vacation.
How to plan your route
Plan on two or three winery visits in a day, clustered in one area, rather than trying to cover the trail’s full reach. Leave time for lunch and a glass somewhere you want to linger. Baroda and Berrien Springs make a practical pairing for a vineyard-focused day; Fennville fits naturally with a stay near Saugatuck. Treat the Kalamazoo area as its own outing rather than an extra detour after a full lakeshore itinerary.
St. Joseph is a useful base for the southern portion of the trail, while South Haven and Saugatuck suit a northern-focused trip. All three have additional member tasting rooms, giving you an in-town option alongside winery visits that require driving. Choose your overnight base after choosing the area you most want to explore, and arrange a designated driver for winery-hopping days.
When to go and what to expect
Late summer into fall is a good choice for combining winery visits with time outdoors; summer also works well for a wine-and-lake weekend. Check individual opening hours before setting out, especially for weekdays or an off-season visit. Winery calendars include live music, food trucks and other activities, so check ahead if you want entertainment—or prefer a tasting without a soundtrack.
Tastings generally cost $5–$15 per person for four to six tastes. Wine by the glass and bottles are also available, with prices set by each winery. Reservation requirements vary for both small parties and larger groups; confirm each tasting room’s policy rather than assuming walk-ins are accepted. Tipping tasting room staff is customary. Keep the schedule loose enough to stay when you find somewhere worth returning.
