Domaine Berrien Cellars

Domaine Berrien Cellars is a family-rooted Southwest Michigan winery in Berrien Springs, in the Lake Michigan Shore AVA, built around the idea that this corner of Michigan can do more than the usual sweet-and-simple tasting room lineup. The vineyard began in 1992 when Tom and Abigail Fricke bought an 80-acre tart cherry farm and started replanting it to wine grapes, convinced the site could handle Rhône varieties like Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Their daughter Katie Maurer and son-in-law Wally Maurer turned that vineyard project into Domaine Berrien Cellars in 2001, and the winery remains firmly estate-driven: 40 acres under vine, 21 grape varieties, and 100 percent estate-grown wines.

That estate focus shows up in a broad, unusually ambitious range for Michigan, from Dry Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Traminette to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Bordeaux-style blend called Crown of Cabernet. There is even a Cabernet Franc ice wine and an oak-aged Marsanne, which tells you this is a place willing to push beyond the standard Midwest playbook. Since 2022, the winery has been led by Amy Birk and Jacob Nivison, longtime team members with backgrounds in chemistry, wine education, enology, and viticulture.

Visiting feels straightforward and vineyard-centered. The tasting room sits among the vines, guided tastings pour five wines, and the deck and backyard are set up for lingering over a bottle with a picnic.
