Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail
The Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail connects tasting rooms north of Traverse City, Michigan, on a narrow peninsula stretching into Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay.
The Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail connects wineries on Old Mission Peninsula, just north of Traverse City, Michigan, between the arms of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. The peninsula stretches 19 miles and measures just four miles across at its widest point, with rolling hills, vineyards and bay views shaping the drive. This is a wine-tasting day with scenery built in—not a walkable tasting-room district.
Expect tastings and flights, with wine by the glass and light bites available at many locations. Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are among the wines to look for, alongside sparkling wines and ice wines. You don’t need a wine vocabulary to enjoy yourself; asking what’s grown locally is a useful place to start.
How to plan your tasting day
Plan on three winery visits for an unhurried day, leaving room for lunch, driving and time outside with a glass. The trail recommends allowing roughly 30 minutes to an hour per visit. Tasting rooms are spread along the peninsula rather than clustered together, so group your reservations geographically instead of doubling back between appointments.
Reservations are encouraged at many tasting rooms, although walk-ins are welcome. During summer and fall, groups of six or more should call at least a week ahead. Tasting fees vary by winery; check individual hours, fees and food options before setting your schedule.
Explore independently with a designated driver or book a private transportation company ahead of time. The trail and wineries do not provide guest transportation. Don’t count on Uber or Lyft for your return to Traverse City: visitors have had trouble securing rides back. Cycling isn’t an easy workaround, either, given the hills and high-traffic roads.
Where to stay and when to go
Traverse City is the most practical base for a first visit, with hotels, restaurants and access to the peninsula. For a quieter stay closer to the vineyards, look at inns and B&Bs on Old Mission Peninsula itself.
The trail operates year-round, including weekdays, but individual winery schedules vary. Summer suits travelers who want to combine tasting with beaches and outdoor seating; fall brings seasonal scenery and busy tasting rooms. A weekday visit is a sensible choice if you want a less hectic pace during those peak seasons.
For an event-focused trip, look for the Mac & Cheese Bake-off in late November, and check current ticket arrangements before planning around it. Otherwise, leave some space in the itinerary: the peninsula is worth more than a race between reservations.
