Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail

The Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail is a self-guided tasting route through Santa Barbara, California, linking tasting rooms in the Funk Zone, Presidio, Midtown and Downtown neighborhoods.

The Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail is a self-guided wine-tasting route through the Funk Zone, Presidio, Midtown and Downtown neighborhoods of Santa Barbara, California. This is city wine tasting, not a vineyard drive: expect tasting-room patios, working wineries and a waterfront setting, with restaurants and shops to break up the afternoon.

Choose a neighborhood, not a checklist

The Funk Zone is the natural starting point for a first visit. Its tasting rooms share a compact area near the ocean and train station with galleries, breweries and restaurants, making it easy to explore on foot. The Presidio neighborhood offers downtown tasting rooms tucked around patios and historic surroundings. Downtown adds more tasting options along the city's commercial streets, while Midtown is worth considering if you want to taste inside a working winery. Some production facilities offer tours by inquiry—ask ahead rather than expecting one with every tasting.

The trail extends beyond a single walkable cluster. Pick one neighborhood for a relaxed afternoon, or arrange a ride between areas rather than trying to cover the whole map. Two or three tastings in a day, with a proper meal between them, leave time to enjoy what you're drinking. The trail does not provide tours or transportation.

Plan your visit

Santa Barbara itself is the most convenient base, particularly lodging near Downtown or the waterfront if you want to leave the car parked. Nearby Goleta can also work as a base, but plan transportation into Santa Barbara for tasting.

Spring and fall are good choices for combining tasting with walking around town; choose a weekday if avoiding weekend bustle matters more than catching live music. Each tasting room sets its own hours, so check your intended route before leaving. Many require reservations, and most require them for groups of eight or more.

Expect tasting fees averaging approximately $15–$30 for four or five wines, with exact prices varying by winery. Most wineries do not serve food, though most allow outside snacks. Confirm the policy and build in a lunch stop rather than assuming the next tasting room has a kitchen.

Tasting Card and events

The Wine Tasting Card includes one complimentary tasting per person at each active trail winery, plus a 10% discount on a single purchase on the tasting day. Cards expire at the end of the purchase month in the following year. Order one for shipping or check availability before collecting it at a participating tasting room.

Check the trail calendar for winery tastings, live music, wine releases and recurring gatherings. An event can be a good reason to choose one neighborhood over another—and to leave some breathing room in your afternoon.
