Door County Wine Trail
The Door County Wine Trail connects tasting rooms on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula and south to Algoma, with grape wines, cherry wines and cider along the way.
The Door County Wine Trail is a self-guided winery route on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, with tasting rooms around Sturgeon Bay, Carlsville, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Baileys Harbor, plus a southern stop in Algoma. Expect a mix of vineyard settings, working orchards, historic buildings and patios overlooking Lake Michigan—not a compact district you can explore entirely on foot.
Cherry wine belongs on the tasting list here, but it does not tell the whole story. Wineries also pour dry reds and whites, wines from cold-hardy grapes grown in Wisconsin, and wines made with West Coast fruit. Hard cider appears on some menus, too. The useful distinction is not simply sweet versus dry: ask which bottles use locally grown fruit if you want a taste of the area.
How to plan a tasting day
Plan two or three winery visits in a day, leaving room for lunch and time outside the tasting room. Group nearby locations rather than zigzagging between the peninsula’s bay side, Lake Michigan shore and Algoma. Covering the trail’s wider footprint makes more sense over a weekend than in one determined afternoon.
Sturgeon Bay makes a practical base for combining the southern stretch with trips farther north. Egg Harbor works well for a Highway 42-focused stay, while Fish Creek puts restaurants and Peninsula State Park within reach between tastings. Choose Baileys Harbor if you would rather base yourself on the Lake Michigan side.
Each winery sets its own tasting fees, reservation policies and tour arrangements. Some offer production tours; others focus on flights and glasses to enjoy on-site. Check directly before arriving, particularly with a group. The trail does not provide transportation or multi-winery tours. Door County Trolley offers separate multi-winery excursions; otherwise, arrange a designated driver.
When to go and what to book
Late spring through early fall is the easiest time to combine tastings with patios, orchard walks and waterfront breaks. Summer brings longer opening hours at many locations; fall adds foliage but still calls for checking schedules. Winter can work for a quieter tasting weekend, though shorter hours and midweek closures make advance planning important.
The trail’s Wine Passport is worth reviewing before your trip to see whether its current offers match your plans. Participants must be at least 21 and present the physical passport and valid identification to redeem offers. Online purchases are mailed, so allow delivery time; lost or stolen passports cannot be replaced.
The signature Door County Wine Fest takes place in June in Baileys Harbor, bringing wine tastings, live music, Wisconsin cheese and food trucks together. It is a useful introduction to the trail’s wines, but leave time for the tasting rooms themselves: an orchard patio or a lakeside glass is a different experience from a festival pour.
