Michael Ros Winery

100% Texas winery near Fredericksburg with estate vineyards in both the Texas High Plains and Hill Country

Best known for: 100% Texas wines from estate and Texas-grown fruit

Michael Ros Winery is a family-owned Fredericksburg winery built around a clear idea: make 100% Texas wine and keep as much of the process tied to Texas ground as possible. Mike and Rosann Mitrione planted their first vineyard in Brownfield in the Texas High Plains AVA in 2018, then added a Fredericksburg property in the Texas Hill Country AVA after relocating in 2021. Today the winery works from 37 acres of vines across the two regions, with Mike focused on viticulture and winemaking alongside head winemaker Tim Drake, a Washington-trained producer who has worked in Texas since 2010.

The wine range leans into grapes that make sense in Texas rather than forcing a Napa template onto Hill Country weather. Expect bottles like Albariño, Picpoul Blanc, Roussanne, Trebbiano, Viognier, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Malbec, Tannat, and Italian-leaning blends such as Bisaccia and Piazza Rossa. The awards list is already crowded: the 2023 Albariño earned Double Gold and Best of Show at the 2024 San Antonio Wine & Rodeo International Wine Competition, while the 2024 Sangiovese Rosé took Gold and Best of Show Texas Rosé in the 2025-2026 edition of that competition.

For visitors, this is a polished but not fussy stop about a mile off Highway 290. The circular tasting room sits on 38 acres with vines, pecan trees, broad glass walls, and a second-floor perch over the property. One of the better details here is literal: some tasting room tables are built from pecan trees removed on-site, a small touch that makes the place feel rooted instead of staged. Reservations are recommended, especially for tastings, though walk-ins can sometimes slide in if space allows.
