Monticello Wine Trail

The Monticello Wine Trail connects wineries around Charlottesville in Central Virginia, with vineyard visits stretching from Crozet and Afton to Keswick and Barboursville.

The Monticello Wine Trail connects wineries around Charlottesville in Central Virginia’s Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA), a federally recognized winegrowing region established in 1984. Expect rolling farmland, Blue Ridge foothill views and tasting rooms that range from small family-run operations to larger estates. The appeal is the combination: a countryside wine trip with Charlottesville’s restaurants and lodging close at hand.

How to plan your tasting route

This is a driving trail, not a walkable tasting district or a single road lined with wineries. Destinations extend in different directions from Charlottesville, so proximity on a regional map does not necessarily mean a quick trip between tasting rooms. Pick one part of the countryside for the day rather than zigzagging across the region.

Two or three winery visits make a sensible full-day plan, with time for lunch, the drives and a glass somewhere you want to linger. Group Crozet and Afton together for a western route, or concentrate on Keswick and Barboursville to the east and northeast. The trail’s online itinerary planner lets you select destinations, reorder them and generate a route from an optional starting address. Check actual driving times before booking tastings, and arrange a designated driver or wine-tour transportation.

Charlottesville is the most practical all-around base, especially if dinner choices matter as much as vineyard views. Crozet works well for a trip focused on the western side; Afton is another option if you prefer to stay near the Blue Ridge rather than in town.

When to go and what to check

For outdoor tasting weather, aim for spring or fall; summer can be hot and humid. Autumn foliage adds another reason to linger outside, but don't expect the countryside to yourself on a fall weekend. A weekday is a better bet if a quieter tasting matters most—just confirm opening hours before setting out.

Reservation requirements, group policies, food options and tasting fees vary by winery. Check each destination directly rather than assuming the same rules apply across the trail. If seeing wine production matters to you, the trail directory distinguishes vineyards with onsite winemaking from those whose wines are made elsewhere.

Monticello Wine Week takes place in June, with regional wine events in and around Charlottesville. The annual Gold Medal Celebration recognizes wines from the Monticello Cup competition. Check the current event calendar before planning around either; individual wineries also host events throughout the year.
