Whitman Hill Winery

Estate-grown Bordeaux varieties and vineyard-side tastings in Zillah, Washington’s Yakima Valley

Best known for: Estate-grown Bordeaux varieties fermented separately by vineyard block

Whitman Hill Winery in Zillah, Washington, pairs estate-grown Bordeaux varieties with a tasting room that makes a strong case for leaving time between winery stops. Scott and Denise Whitman run this family-owned Yakima Valley property, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot anchor the wine focus. Vineyard manager Joel Santos brings more than 30 years of experience to the farming, while individual vineyard blocks receive separate picking and fermentation to preserve their differences.

The estate setting is the reason to choose the Zillah location: lawns, a water feature, and seating tucked throughout the landscaping put the vines in view rather than somewhere offstage. A double-sided fireplace, outdoor fire tables, heaters, and blankets extend the appeal beyond warm afternoons. Seated tastings take place indoors or outside, with a $15 Signature Tasting and a $25 Élevage Tasting & Pairing featuring small bites. Charcuterie and other light bites are available; outside food is not permitted.

For a closer look at the growing side, March–October brings two reservation-only options: a $25 walking tour past the pond vineyard, followed by a tasting, or a $60 UTV vineyard tour and VIP tasting for up to four guests. Regular tastings welcome walk-ins, though reservations are recommended. The estate opens Wednesday through Sunday, making it a useful midweek stop as well as a weekend destination.
