Velen Winery

Family-run estate winery in Zillah growing Cabernet, Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot in Washington’s Yakima Valley

Best known for: Estate-grown reds from Washington’s Yakima Valley

Velen Winery in Zillah, Washington, centers on estate-grown reds and the hands-on partnership of John and Rebecca Otis. John handles winemaking; Rebecca manages the vineyard, where Cabernet, Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot grow. The name combines Vera and Helen, their mothers’ names—a family connection that also carries into the Velen Family Wine Club.

The couple’s Washington venture has its roots in a Valentine’s Day trip to the Yakima Valley, with a move from Texas to Zillah following just twelve weeks later. Their tasting room dates to May 2019. Another personal connection shapes the Alyssa wine: a portion of its sales supports the Alyssa Project, which helps provide cancer patients with comforts such as massages and manicures.

For travelers, Velen offers a useful combination: red wine tasting, a kid- and dog-friendly property, and Harvest Hosts camping spaces with mountain views. Friday through Sunday afternoons bring noon-to-five tasting hours; weekday tastings are available by appointment at 509-854-1120. Camping spaces require a call to book, making this a potential overnight stop rather than just another tasting between drives.

Tasting Hours
