Estate-grown American heritage grapes on 14 vineyard acres north of Kansas City, Missouri

Best known for: Estate-grown wines from rare American heritage grapes

TerraVox Winery grows American heritage grapes on 14 acres in the rolling hills north of Kansas City, Missouri. Founder Jerry Eisterhold takes inspiration from grape breeder Thomas Volney Munson, whose work underpins the winery’s exploration of varieties rarely encountered in tasting rooms. Every grape comes from the estate; TerraVox purchases no outside fruit or juice. The draw is the chance to taste American wine beyond the usual Cabernet-and-Chardonnay frame.

Norton, Missouri’s signature red grape, shares space with less familiar names such as Cloeta, Wetumka, Hidalgo, and Lenoir. The 2021 Cloeta offers a full-bodied red with coffee, chocolate, and smoky flavors, while the 2021 Hidalgo brings apricot, honeysuckle, and lychee notes to the white-wine side. The range gives visitors more than a historical curiosity: these grapes produce distinctly different wines worth comparing.

The tasting room opens Thursday through Sunday for tastings and wine by the glass, with vineyard views as part of the appeal. Reserved guided tours and tastings cost $40 per person and connect the wines with the estate’s history and grapes. Vineyard picnics pair a bottle with charcuterie and a supplied blanket. Outside food and alcohol are not permitted, and private events can affect regular hours.
