RZN Wines
Skateboarding-rooted family wine label in Lompoc, California, with a less-is-more approach to winemaking
Best known for: Less-intervention wines including Chenin Blanc and Mencía
RZN Wines, pronounced “reason,” is Nate Axline’s family wine label in Lompoc, California, pairing a less-is-more winemaking philosophy with a skateboarder’s sensibility. With its first vintage in 2020, RZN takes its name from Rachelle, Zane and Nate Axline. Nate’s background includes 12 years in skate, surf and snow industry sales, plus winemaking experience as assistant winemaker at Liquid Farm. The skateboarding connection runs deeper than the graphics: even the wine club goes by “The Street Team.”
Chenin Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Mencía, Mourvèdre and Syrah give RZN a range beyond the usual Chardonnay-and-Cabernet pairing. Bottles generally fall between $30 and $35. Axline’s guiding principle is less intervention: fewer chemicals in the vineyard, fewer additions in the cellar and less manipulation overall. For travelers interested in less-familiar grapes, Clairette Blanche and Mencía are particular reasons to pay attention.
Tastings at RZN Wines are by appointment at 1225 West Laurel Avenue in Lompoc. Visitors arrange a tasting directly through Nate at [email protected] or (805) 332-6354, making this a planned stop rather than a drop-in visit.
