Old Stone Cider

Heirloom-apple cider in a rebuilt dairy barn on the Gruber family’s farm in Lewisville, Pennsylvania

Best known for: English-style cider from orchard-grown heirloom apple varieties

Old Stone Cider’s Old Stone Barn in Lewisville, Pennsylvania, pairs English-style cider with a rebuilt Pennsylvania bank barn in Chester County’s rolling hills. The Gruber family’s former dairy barn serves as the tasting room, a role it holds since opening in 2016. The operation grows more than 20 apple varieties, with traditional English cider apples and American heirlooms giving the drinks their character. This is a cider stop on a working farm, not an apple-picking attraction; the orchard itself remains closed to visitors.

The range rewards attention to the apple names. Roxbury Russet makes a light, slightly tart pub-style cider, while Dabinett offers a semi-dry pour with apricot notes. Wickson Crabapple takes a drier, citrusy direction at 10.5% alcohol. For something richer, the Bourbon Barrel cider spends a year in bourbon barrels. Late Season Mead adds another connection to the farm: its honey comes from the on-site apiary. Rotating beers and nonalcoholic slushies give groups alternatives to cider.

The barn opens Thursday and Friday evenings and from noon into the evening on weekends during the season. Food trucks provide meals, and guests may bring snacks and appetizers. Leashed dogs and adult-supervised children are welcome. Groups of 12 or fewer can arrive without advance arrangements, with seating first come, first served; larger parties require rental arrangements.
