HOUSE OF SMITH - Jet City

Seattle, Washington urban winery in a former Dr. Pepper bottling plant overlooking Boeing Field

Best known for: Washington single-vineyard Syrah and old-vine Chardonnay

House of Smith Jet City brings winemaker Charles Smith’s Washington wines to a former Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood. The setting is decidedly urban: rock music accompanies tastings, and views take in Boeing Field’s main runways and Mount Rainier. Two tasting rooms by Olson Kundig Architects give the building distinct personalities—a rustic Northwest main floor and a larger upstairs space with an early-1960s aviation theme. This is a wine stop for travelers who prefer planes and industrial architecture to vineyard scenery.

Smith’s wine family gives visitors several directions to explore. K Vintners centers on small-lot, single-vineyard Syrah alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo and Sangiovese, using hand-picked grapes, naturally occurring yeasts and basket pressing. CasaSmith takes Italian varieties such as Barbera and Primitivo into Washington vineyards. SIXTO concentrates exclusively on old-vine Chardonnay from higher-elevation, cool-climate sites, including Frenchman Hills, Moxee and Roza Hills.

Jet City welcomes walk-ins Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., with flights, glasses and bottles available. Weekday visitors have a useful incentive: Wednesday-through-Friday happy hour runs from 3 to 5 p.m., with selected glass pours at half price. Charcuterie and snacks are available; outside food stays outside. Groups of eight or more need to call for reservations, and the final flights begin at 5:30 p.m. Children are welcome; animals are limited to service animals.
