Devil's Bedstead
Greg Koenig’s small-production Caldwell winery focused on Fraser Cabernet Sauvignon, estate Merlot, and reserve reds
Best known for: Fraser Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and small-production reserve reds
Devil’s Bedstead in Caldwell, Idaho, brings Greg and Kristen Koenig’s three decades of winemaking experience into a small-production project centered on two vineyards. Koenig Estate, with plantings dating to 1996, supplies Merlot and Viognier; Fraser Vineyard anchors the Cabernet Sauvignon. The appeal is the narrow focus: a handful of wines from a winemaker with deep roots in Idaho’s Snake River Valley.
Fraser Cabernet Sauvignon spends 24 months in French oak. Cuvée Alden, named for the Koenigs’ son, combines 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. Cuvée Amelia carries their daughter’s name and takes a different direction: Syrah fermented with a little Viognier, then aged for 22 months in new French oak. Estate Merlot also becomes a dry rosé, while a single acre planted in 2002 supplies the Viognier.
The tasting room at 21500 Hoskins Road offers tableside service rather than a standing-counter tasting. A $12 reservation allows 90 minutes, with visits available Friday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; walk-ins depend on space. In suitable weather, the terrace offers first-come seating for wine by the glass or bottle, and picnics are welcome. Pets and children under 18 are not accommodated, making this a stop for an adults-only wine weekend rather than a family outing.
