Casa Carmen Wines

Family-run Brandywine Valley winery in Pennsylvania pairing local-grape wines and botanical vermouths with seasonal tapas

Best known for: Low-intervention local-grape wines and botanical vermouths

Brothers Enrique and Felipe Pallares run Casa Carmen Wines in West Grove, Pennsylvania, as both a winery and a place to settle in over tapas. Established in 2017, the family business occupies a hillside farm in Chester County’s Brandywine Valley, about 15 minutes from Longwood Gardens. The brothers’ Ecuadorian roots and professional polo backgrounds give the story an unusual starting point; today, Felipe oversees operations, food, and vineyards, while Enrique directs the creative side.

Local grapes, natural fermentations, and minimal intervention guide the wines, which range from dry Espumante sparkling wine to whites, rosé, and reds. The vermouths deserve equal attention. Tender is the Night is a barrel-aged black vermouth flavored with farm-grown black walnuts, anise, rosemary, wormwood, and Seville oranges. The Sun Also Rises takes a white-wine direction with saffron, chamomile, cardamom, and citrus. These are wines fortified with spirit and flavored with botanicals—not merely cocktail supporting players.

The farm tasting room serves seasonal tapas alongside wine, vermouth, local beer, and cocktails. Grapes, vegetables, and botanicals share the property, with sheep contributing to the farming practices. Indoor seating, outdoor spaces, and a lawn accommodate different kinds of afternoons; regular live music and dance classes add reasons to linger. Groups of up to five need no reservation, while larger parties coordinate by email. Leashed dogs stay outside, and children are welcome on the working farm.
