Shawangunk Wine Trail

The Shawangunk Wine Trail connects wineries across New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley, between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Hudson River. Explore by car, with tasting days built around nearby towns.

The Shawangunk Wine Trail is a winery touring route through New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley, between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Hudson River. Established in 1984, it stretches across towns including Warwick, Montgomery, Marlboro, Gardiner and New Paltz. This is a countryside driving trip, not a walkable tasting district: the best plan is to choose one part of the trail and give yourself time to enjoy it.

How to plan a tasting day

Plan on two or three winery visits in a day, with a lunch break and time between appointments. The trail spans enough ground that jumping from Warwick to New Paltz can eat into your tasting time. Group visits around Warwick, Marlboro, or the Gardiner–New Paltz area rather than zigzagging across the map. A weekend gives you room to explore different areas without making every afternoon a race to the next tasting counter.

The appeal is the mix: vineyards, farm settings and tasting rooms across the valley, with cider and spirits also part of the broader trail experience. Leave room for a farm-market visit or a walk rather than treating the day as a checklist.

Contact each winery before setting out: reservations may be required, and opening hours need to work with your route. Ask about tasting fees and group policies when booking. Arrange a designated driver or book a local wine-tour service or private driver in advance.

Where to stay and when to go

New Paltz is a useful base for the northern part of the trail, including Gardiner and Marlboro; Warwick makes more sense for a southern-focused visit. Newburgh and New Windsor offer another lodging option if you prefer to stay near major road connections. The trail is promoted as about 90 minutes from New York City, but allow extra time for traffic and your particular destination.

Late spring through early fall is a good choice for combining tastings with outdoor time. Autumn adds foliage to the drive; leave breathing room in your schedule rather than stacking appointments tightly.

Passports and seasonal events

The Hudson Valley Passport offers savings on tastings during its January–August program. Check current participation and redemption rules before building your itinerary around it. Seasonal trail events include Earth Day Weekend in spring, Summer Sip in July and Harvest the Hudson in September. Check each event’s current ticketing and reservation requirements before you go.
