Keuka Lake Wine Trail
The Keuka Lake Wine Trail links wineries around Keuka Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes wine region. Explore lakeside roads and hillside tasting rooms, with Hammondsport or Penn Yan as a base.
The Keuka Lake Wine Trail is a wine-tasting route around Keuka Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes American Viticultural Area (AVA). Its wineries sit along and above the lake’s branching shoreline, making this a driving trip rather than a walk-between-tastings destination. The draw is the combination: time in tasting rooms, vineyard-covered hillsides and a lake that keeps coming back into view.
How to plan your tasting day
A complete circuit of Keuka Lake takes just over an hour to drive, before tasting appointments, lunch or detours. That makes the area manageable for a weekend, but it is not a reason to rush around the whole lake in an afternoon. Plan for three tasting visits in a day, group your appointments geographically and leave room for lunch. Spending more time on one stretch of shoreline beats repeatedly crossing between opposite sides.
Hammondsport and Penn Yan are practical bases. Hammondsport sits at the lake’s southern tip; Penn Yan is at the northern end of its eastern branch. Both offer lodging and places to eat, so choose according to where you want to begin and end your day—not just which room has the best view.
Reservation rules vary by winery, group size and tasting experience. The trail recommends visiting in groups of four to eight, with larger parties making advance arrangements directly with each winery. Arrange transportation before you arrive: Uber and Lyft are not reliable here. Book a local driver or wine-tour service, or designate a non-drinking driver.
When to go and how the passes work
Summer suits travelers who want lake time alongside their tastings; early fall is a good choice for vineyard scenery. The trail can be visited year-round, but some wineries change their hours seasonally. Check each tasting room’s schedule before building an itinerary, especially for a winter or weekday visit.
The digital Tasting Passport arrives by text and email and requires no app. Holders must be at least 21, and passport sales are limited to groups of six or fewer—a separate restriction from the trail’s general group guidance. Redeem the first offer within 90 days of purchase. Passports are non-refundable but transferable.
A passport does not reserve tasting appointments, so make any required bookings separately. The trail also offers a Glass Pass, which provides a glass of wine at each participating winery. Choose the experience that fits your plans rather than letting a pass turn the day into a checklist.
