Kansas City Wine Trail
The Kansas City Wine Trail is a driving loop through Kansas City and western Missouri, reaching east to Waverly. Explore urban tasting rooms, farm vineyards and small-town wineries at your own pace.
The Kansas City Wine Trail is a winery driving loop through Kansas City and western Missouri, stretching east to Waverly, about 70 miles from the city. It connects urban tasting rooms with vineyard properties and small towns, making it a good choice for a wine weekend with some city time on either end.
The contrast is the draw: a tasting room in Kansas City's historic Stockyards District gives way to hillside vineyards, lakeside patios and rural properties. Along the route, tasting spaces include a restored farm barn and a former church built in 1858 in Dover, on the historic Santa Fe Trail. Wines range from dry reds and whites to sweeter grape and fruit wines. Tell the tasting room staff what you normally enjoy rather than assuming every Missouri wine will be sweet.
How to plan your route
Treat this as a driving trip, not a walkable tasting district. The route forms a complete loop, so you can begin anywhere and travel in either direction. Listed distances between consecutive wineries range from roughly four to 30 miles. The trail's trip-planning information includes approximate mileage and nearby attractions, useful for deciding where to linger and where to keep moving.
For an unhurried day, plan two or three tastings in one part of the loop, with time for lunch and a patio break. A weekend gives you room to explore farther east without turning the afternoon into a race against closing time. Choose a designated driver before setting out.
Where to stay and when to go
Kansas City makes a useful base if restaurants and evening plans matter as much as vineyard time. Independence works well for combining wine stops with Harry S. Truman historic sites. Lexington is worth considering for an eastern-focused itinerary, with lodging options that include bed-and-breakfasts in historic homes. Staying at a winery is also an option along the route.
For outdoor seating, aim for mild spring weather or early fall; summer visits are better planned with Missouri heat in mind. Check each tasting room's current hours before building your route, and ask about reservations if you're bringing a group. Confirm food availability separately, too: a pizza oven or picnic setting does not necessarily mean lunch is available whenever you arrive. Leave room for Lexington's historic sites or a walk in downtown Lee's Summit—the best version of this trip isn't just a string of tasting counters.
