Applegate Valley Wine Trail

The Applegate Valley Vintners Association connects wineries along the Applegate Wine Trail in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley, a rural wine region near Jacksonville and Grants Pass.

The Applegate Valley Vintners Association represents wineries along the Applegate Wine Trail in Southern Oregon’s Applegate Valley, near Jacksonville and Grants Pass. This is a rural, drive-between-tastings route rather than a walkable tasting district: come for small producers, conversations about what they grow and make, and a day that leaves room to linger.

The Applegate Valley extends 50 miles north from the California border along the Applegate River, with farms and vineyards set between forested hillsides. Its designated winegrowing area, the 275,000-acre Applegate Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA), sits within the Rogue Valley AVA and the larger Southern Oregon AVA. Those boundaries explain where you are; the appeal on the ground is the chance to get beyond the better-known Oregon wine routes and spend time with smaller operations.

How to plan your tasting day

Plan on two or three tastings in a day, with a lunch break and time for the drive between properties. The valley’s length is not the distance you must cover, but it is a good reason to group your choices geographically instead of zigzagging across the region. Check the current trail map before booking, and resist adding another appointment just because it looks close on the screen.

Jacksonville makes a useful base if you want to pair country drives with meals and an overnight stay in a historic town. Grants Pass is another practical option, particularly if your wider trip includes the Rogue River area. Arrange a designated driver or transportation in advance; this is not a route to plan around walking between tasting rooms.

Check each tasting room’s opening days, reservation requirements and fees before setting out. Small-producer wine country rewards a little advance planning, and you should not assume every stop keeps the same hours or accepts walk-ins.

When to visit

Late spring through early fall is a good window for combining tastings with time outdoors. Choose a weekday if a quieter pace matters more than having the broadest choice of open tasting rooms, and confirm schedules first.

The association’s fall Uncorked event takes place in November, offering a signature occasion around which to plan a visit. Check the current event arrangements before booking your trip, since ticketing and participation can change.
