The Review
With the abundance and growing popularity of wine tasting in Temecula, each winery is searching for a way to stand out. Bailys has opted for the medieval approach to wine tasting, at least in décor. Bailys is also one of the few wineries that offers a place to enjoy a meal with outdoor seating at Carols Restaurant.
The Place:  Bailys offers a spacious parking lot and a tasting room designed in the manner of a castle banquet hall. As you walk past the manicured lawn towards the ivy covered stone walls of the winery you can enjoy the view of the vineyard on your left. Bailys houses a separate wine tasting room and Carols Restaurant. A private banquet room is also available for up to 48 people for dining events. Keeping with the medieval theme throughout the wine tasting room and the restaurant, suit of armors are displayed and tapestries hang from the walls. The décor in the restaurant is far more impressive than the mediocre décor of the wine tasting room-which at times felt like you were wine tasting at Medieval Times.
The Experience:  The tall ceilings and large bar offer a spacious wine tasting experience. During our tasting, the large bar only had one employee working, which resulted in delays in our next taste. While the employee was pleasant and doing his best to interact with the customers and ensure everyone had their wine glasses full, it was clear that he was overworked. After our tasting, we ventured over to Carols restaurant happy to have found food in wine country. The inside area was completely empty, as everyone opted for the patio due to the lovely weather. Two waitresses bustled about trying to keep up with the customer demands and the lack of a hostess. The inside dining area’s medieval decor, with a great fireplace complete with faux smoke stains, was impressive. The outdoor area was consistent with stone and heavy iron patio furniture. Carols – not surprisingly – offered the full selection of Bailys wines. It was a pleasant lunch break before continuing to taste.
The Wines: Wine tasting is $5 during the weekdays and $10 on weekends for six tastes, without any restrictions. Additionally, $5 dollars is credited to your purchase which made it one of the more economical choices for wine tasting. Bailys offers a wide selection of wines, to include dessert wines. The whites include your standard Chardonnay and Riesling, but also the Montage which is a mix of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The reds range from the light and fruity Nouveau to the 2005 Meritage, which is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The vineyard favorite is the 2008 M&M wine, which is a blend of Merlot and Malbec.
Insiders Tip:  As with many Temecula wineries, Bailys offers a wine club called the Bailys Cellar Rats that offer discounts on their wine, tastings, and food at Carols restaurant. Wine specials are available for nonmembers as well, such as buy five bottles get one free, or buy ten bottles and get two free.
