Sunset Cellars

Minimalist winery with sustainable practices and historic roots

Best known for: Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono

Founded in 1997 by Japanese-American pioneers Katsuko and Doug Sparks in a garage in San Francisco's Inner Sunset District, Sunset Cellars has grown into a second-generation winery.

The winery follows a 'Zen Zin' minimalist winemaking philosophy, which emphasizes respecting the hard work of the vineyard crews. Their process involves hand-sorting grapes, gentle fermentation, and a restrained use of new oak barrels to highlight the natural flavors of the grapes.

Sunset Cellars specializes in red wine varieties such as Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono. They also produce white wines on an occasional basis.

The estate vineyard is located in the Green Valley of Solano County. The maritime climate there helps the grapes retain fresh acidity and ripen evenly.
