Dovecote Estate Winery

Own-rooted Syrah and Rhône blends in California’s Alisos Canyon, with pondside estate tastings

Best known for: Own-rooted estate Syrah and native-yeast Rhône blends

Dovecote Estate Winery pairs own-rooted Syrah with reservation-only tastings beside Mission Pond in California’s Alisos Canyon American Viticultural Area, near Los Alamos in Santa Barbara County. Owner, farmer, and winemaker Noah Rowles handles both growing and winemaking, while three generations of the Cervantes family live and work on the ranch. Juventino “Tino” Cervantes’s connection to Thompson Vineyard stretches back to its original 1989–1991 plantings. The vines grow on their own roots rather than grafted rootstock—an unusual feature that runs through the estate’s identity.

Syrah is the main draw, alongside Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Rhône-style blends. Mantle combines roughly 80 percent Grenache with 20 percent Syrah through sequential co-fermentation, bringing the grapes together during fermentation rather than simply blending finished wines. Redtail changes its proportions with each vintage and ages for 18 months in neutral French oak barrels, which contribute less oak flavor than new barrels. Native vineyard yeasts drive fermentation.

The historic redwood Shack at Mission Pond gives the visit its focal point, with vineyard views and tastings hosted by winemaking team members. Flights cost $45 or $75 per adult, with the fee waived on a purchase of at least three bottles. Reservations are essential: Dovecote is also a private residence, not a drop-in tasting counter.
