The Southern Gateway Wine Trail connects wineries around Lexington and Trinity, North Carolina, for a driving trip built around tasting rooms, vineyard patios and time outside. The appeal is the variety: you can pair a tasting and restaurant lunch with a quieter afternoon picnic, or plan a visit around live music rather than spend the day moving from counter to counter.
How to plan your route
These wineries are spread across the countryside around Lexington and east toward Trinity, not lined up along a walkable main street. Lexington is the most practical base for a first visit because much of the trail is concentrated around it. Trinity makes a useful starting point if you want to begin at the eastern end.
Plan on two or three winery visits in a day, leaving room for lunch, driving and a longer stay if the patio wins you over. Group nearby addresses together rather than zigzagging between Lexington and Trinity, and choose a designated driver before the first tasting. A shorter itinerary makes particular sense on Sundays, when several tasting rooms do not open until 1 p.m.
What visiting is like
The settings range from a tasting room with an on-site restaurant to outdoor spaces with vineyard views, a sheltered patio or a fire pit. Wine selections include familiar grape varieties alongside fruit wines and muscadine wines, made from grapes native to the southeastern United States. There is no reason everyone in your group needs to like the same style.
A picnic is an option at a vineyard that explicitly welcomes outside food, children and pets, but those policies are not trail-wide. Check each property's rules before packing lunch or bringing the dog. Groups of six or more should call ahead: a reservation requirement applies at one tasting room, and tours may need advance scheduling.
When to go
Saturday from spring through fall is the simplest planning choice. Hours vary considerably: some tasting rooms open during the week, while others concentrate on weekends. Winter closures also affect the route, including a vineyard that closes December through February.
For music, look for a free weekend series running May through October, alongside individual vineyard performances. Confirm the current calendar and opening hours before leaving; an afternoon concert is worth building time around, not squeezing between tastings.
