Although grapes have been grown in Texas since the 1660s, modern winemaking did not make a comeback in Texas until the 1970s. Since that time, the industry has seen significant growth, and Texas’ 200+ wineries produce enough wine to make Texas the fifth largest wine producing state. Yet, approximately 95% of Texas wine is consumed locally. Texas wineries are concentrated in the eastern regions of the state with dozens of wineries located near both the Dallas and Houston metropolitan areas.
