The Russian River Valley AVA is one of America’s premier grape growing areas. Due to the AVA’s large size, numerous microclimates exist within its boundaries and allow for the production of both warm and cool climate grapes. Located one hour north of San Francisco in Sonoma County, the Russian River Valley’s climate is heavily influenced by the Russian River and by cool coastal winds and fog entering the valley from the south. These coastal winds result in a cooler southern valley and a warmer northern valley. The Russian River Valley AVA is home to over 300 wineries ranging from small family wineries producing less than a 1000 cases a year to industry giants with annual production greater than 200,000 cases. Wineries located within the Russian River Valley are not alone in making wines with Russian River Valley grapes. Non-resident California wineries such as Kistler, Kosta Browne, Dumol, Williams Selyem, Paul Hobbs, Carlisle, and Chausseur routinely produce award-winning Russian River wines.
