The Shenandoah Valley doesn't have the concentration of wineries that you might find in Central or Northern Virginia, but the few that are in this wine region tend to be spectacular and produce excellent wines. Valhalla Vineyards, located in the southern tip of the Shenandoah, illustrates this...
Valhalla Vineyards
Underground barrel cave with historic winemaking charm
Best known for: Estate-grown Syrah and unique underground barrel cave
Valhalla Vineyards is located atop Mt. Chestnut in Roanoke, Virginia, and has been a popular spot for wine lovers for over 31 years. It was founded by James and Debra Vascik in 1994, starting with a simple idea: to craft quality wines by transforming their land. They cleared peach trees to make room for grape vines and aimed for perfection in every bottle.
Valhalla was a pioneer in Virginia’s wine scene. It was the first vineyard outside of California to produce Alicante Bouschet and was among the first wineries in the state to grow Syrah. One of its unique features is an underground barrel cave, which provides ideal conditions for aging wines naturally.
Over the years, Valhalla has received more than 100 awards, both nationally and internationally. Its wines have been featured in well-known publications like Wine Spectator and Decanter. As the winemaker prepares to retire and the winery plans to close in May 2025, they have expressed sincere gratitude for all the support they've received from visitors and the community.
The winery is still accepting wine pickup orders based on current inventory, so fans of Valhalla can still enjoy their favorite wines a little longer.
