Prairie Chick Winery & Milieu

Family-vineyard wines from hand-tended Texas grapes in Levelland, with roots in the Beard family’s 1980s vision

Best known for: Texas-grown varietal wines from a hand-tended family vineyard

Prairie Chick Winery & Milieu in Levelland, Texas, centers on a family vineyard and five grape varieties: Muscat Canelli, Riesling, Malvasia Bianca, red Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its roots reach back to Frank and Mary Beard’s vision for Quatri-Vitus Vineyard in the 1980s. Today, a new generation carries that work forward through bottled wines made entirely from Texas-grown grapes, with vineyard work done by hand.

The white grapes deserve as much attention as the familiar reds here: Muscat Canelli and Malvasia Bianca give visitors something beyond the usual Chardonnay-and-Cabernet pairing. The 2019 “Turn Road” Riesling is one named bottling. The family’s agricultural roots, rather than an elaborate tasting-room production, give Prairie Chick its identity.

The tasting room and boutique at 3924 Alaska Road open for Friday-evening visits from 5 to 9 p.m., making this a stop to plan around rather than a casual Saturday detour. Private group tastings are available by appointment through Diane at 806-891-5343. The indoor venue accommodates 25–30 people—a useful indication of the small scale behind the name’s “milieu,” pronounced “mill-you” and used here to mean community.
