English Newsom Cellars
Estate-grown Texas High Plains wines fermented, aged, and bottled at a family-owned Lubbock winery
Best known for: Estate-grown Texas High Plains wines made entirely on-site
English Newsom Cellars in Lubbock, Texas, connects the tasting room directly to the farm: its wines come entirely from estate-grown Texas High Plains AVA grapes, with fermentation, aging, and bottling all taking place at the winery. Behind the operation are Steve and Cindy Newsom, whose grape-growing roots reach back to 2008 and whose winery dates to 2018. Their son, vineyard manager Keegan Newsom, oversees 21 grape varieties across 100 acres in Hockley County. That breadth makes this a place to explore the region rather than chase a single signature grape.
Winemaker Christopher Hull brings experience spanning Texas vineyards and California harvests to the cellar. At the Lubbock tasting room on East Woodrow Road, a $20 tasting covers five one-ounce pours; $25 adds a souvenir glass. Staff sometimes lead complimentary impromptu cellar tours when the season and workload allow—a useful bonus at a working production winery, not a guaranteed part of the tasting.
Timing matters here. Tastings pause during events after 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and after 5 p.m. on Saturdays, even though the winery stays open later. Groups of eight or more need reservations, and Sunday and Monday visits are by appointment only. Children are welcome under direct adult supervision; pets other than ADA service animals are not permitted.
