Dark Hollow Farm

Family-owned Rogue Valley, Oregon, farm pairing small-batch wines from organic grapes with extra virgin olive oil

Best known for: Small-batch Rogue Valley wines from organic grapes

Dark Hollow Farm in Medford, Oregon, pairs small-batch wines with organic extra virgin olive oil on a family-owned working farm in the Rogue Valley. Certified-organic grapes and olives anchor the operation, and “small batch” has real meaning here: the 2023 Winemaker’s Barrel Grenache and Pinot Noir each amount to just 25 cases, with 16 months of French oak aging.

White-wine drinkers have plenty to explore, including dry Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and a blend of 60% Sémillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. The 2024 whites run $26–$28 a bottle; the 2023 barrel-aged reds cost $35. Another reason to pay attention is VIVA VERJUS!, an unfermented, naturally nonalcoholic juice made from green Sauvignon Blanc grapes. Its tartness lends itself to a soda spritz or a salad dressing. The olive operation is equally hands-on: morning-picked fruit goes through the farm’s mill that afternoon.

The tasting room seats 16 indoors, with terrace seating for more than 30 outside. Cheese, charcuterie and other food accompany the wine and olive oil. Children are welcome, as are leashed dogs—the farm’s barn cats and poultry make that leash more than a formality. Visits center on Friday through Sunday from April through October; winter brings shorter weekend hours and appointment arrangements, with confirmation available by phone or text.
