Way Out Wineries Wine Trail
The Way Out Wineries Wine Trail connects family-owned wineries across Texas, from south of Dallas–Fort Worth to north of Austin. Explore by car, with small-town overnight stops and time to linger over tastings.
The Way Out Wineries Wine Trail is a self-drive wine route through Texas, stretching from south of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to north of Austin. Family-owned and operated wineries anchor a broad loop of small towns and country roads. This is a road-trip trail, not a walkable tasting district: choose a manageable section rather than spending your day chasing the next tasting room.
The people behind the wine are a reason to linger. You may find an owner or winemaker behind the bar, with time to explain what they make and answer questions. There is no need to arrive with a wine vocabulary; tell your server what you usually enjoy and ask where to start.
How to plan your route
The wineries are spread far enough apart that grouping nearby visits matters. For a relaxed day, aim for two or three tastings with lunch in between. The trail recommends no more than four or five winery visits in a day, and exploring the full route takes more than one day. A couple of days gives you room to cover more ground without turning every tasting into a clock-watching exercise.
- For the northern section: Granbury, Hico and Burleson are useful towns to consider for an overnight base.
- For the southern section: Look at Hamilton, San Saba or Lampasas, depending on which tasting rooms you want to visit.
- For an easier finish: Start with the winery farthest from your lodging and work your way back.
There is no required visiting order, fixed schedule or trail-provided bus transportation. Check each winery’s opening days, tasting hours and reservation requirements before setting out; hours vary by winery and event weekend. Choose a designated driver, plan a lunch stop and carry water. Outside organized events, do not assume food will be available.
When to go and what to know about events
Spring and fall are sensible choices for a trip with plenty of driving and small-town wandering. Summer visits need a little extra planning: bring an insulated cooler with ice packs so purchased wine does not bake in the car. In winter, check forecasts and road conditions before taking rural routes.
The trail’s signature Road Trip calendar has included Mardi Gras around late winter or early spring, a Summertime Cookoff in summer, and a Christmas Present Passport during the holiday season. These events pair wines with food. Organized Road Trip events are currently paused, so do not plan around an assumed event or passport offering. Check for an announced return before booking; the trail’s mailing list carries updates. Independent visits remain the way to explore on your own schedule, subject to each winery’s hours.
