Vintage North Jersey Wine Trail

The Vintage North Jersey Wine Trail connects wineries across northern and west-central New Jersey, from Sussex County south through Warren and Hunterdon counties to the Princeton area.

The Vintage North Jersey Wine Trail connects wineries across northern and west-central New Jersey, stretching from Sussex County through Warren and Hunterdon counties to the Princeton area in Mercer County. Think countryside drives, farm tasting rooms and vineyard views—not a compact route you can cover between lunch and dinner.

The appeal is the variety. You can taste dry reds and whites, traditional blends and fruit wines, with settings ranging from preserved farmland to hillsides overlooking river valleys. Part of the route falls within the Warren Hills American Viticultural Area, a federally recognized grape-growing region covering 226 square miles. You don't need to know the appellation boundaries to enjoy the drive, but they help explain why this part of New Jersey has a wine identity of its own.

How to plan your visit

Choose a geographic cluster rather than trying to complete the trail in a day. The northern end around Wantage is well removed from the southern tasting rooms near Pennington and Princeton. Leave room for an unhurried tasting, lunch and the drive between properties; use a weekend if you want to explore different sections without watching the clock.

Princeton makes a useful base for the southern end, particularly if you want restaurants and things to do beyond wine tasting. Flemington puts you near the Hunterdon County countryside around Ringoes and Pittstown. For a Warren County-focused outing, use Belvidere or Columbia as your starting point and keep your route local.

The trail provides north-to-south and south-to-north itineraries, useful for deciding which direction makes sense from home. Treat those directions as a planning aid, not confirmation that every listed location is currently receiving visitors. Check each winery's hours, reservation requirements, tasting fees and food policies directly before leaving. Arrange a designated driver rather than assuming transportation will be easy to find between rural properties.

When to go

Late spring through fall is the best fit if vineyard scenery and outdoor seating are priorities. Autumn adds harvest-season activity, while a quieter tasting-room visit may be easier to plan outside major event weekends. Individual wineries also schedule activities throughout the year.

The trail's signature annual Wine & Food Festival brings together participating wineries, food trucks, specialty-food and wine-related vendors, and local bands. Confirm the season's announcement before building a trip around it: the trail calendar currently lists no upcoming events. For an ordinary tasting weekend, check individual winery calendars instead of relying on the trail-wide listing.
