Grape growing in Minnesota is a testament to the benefits of research and resourcefulness. Elmer Swenson, noted horticulturalist, created, among others, the cold-climate Edelweiss and St. Croix varieties. In addition, decades of research at the University of Minnesota has led to the creation of numerous cold-climate varieties to include Frontenac in 1995. Minnesota’s first American Viticultural Area (AVA), Alexandria Lakes, was created in 2005 at the behest of the owners of Carlos Creek Winery. Most of Minnesota’s wineries are located in the southern part of the state near the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
