The Review
In 1999, Darioush Khaledi founded Darioush Winery in Napa’s Oak Knoll District. Mr. Khaledi was born and raised in Iran and gained a love for wine from his father’s winemaking efforts. With its stunning architecture and extraordinary hospitality, Darioush Winery – and the family that founded it – is a testament to Persian culture and the American dream.
An open patio of sculptures, pillars, succulents, fountains, and lush green, fresh-cut yards, as well as at least one smiling concierge, greet visitors to the winery. Upon being seated in a semi-private lounge-style area, complete with chic cushioned leather seats and set glasses for tasting, guests meet their tasting host. We had the pleasure of being hosted by Chris, who for only having worked at Darioush for about two months, had impressive knowledge regarding the property, wines and history of the winery.
Chris started our Signature flight ($40) with a delightful viognier that would pair perfectly with a triple cream brie. With pistachios as a palate cleanser, we moved through a chardonnay, merlot, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Every wine was delicious and unique. Chris surprised us with a special wine to try side by side with the 2012 Cabernet. He gave us a splash of a 2010 Cabernet, which is not always available, and it had notes of dried flower and currants. My favorite of the day! The cork had what looked like diamonds on the surface from the tartaric acid in the bottle. Tip: If you purchase three bottles, your tasting will be complimentary.
Darioush sources it grapes primarily from the southern Napa Valley, and most of its labels sport either a Mount Veeder, or Oak Knoll designation.
Chris invited us to take a glass and walk around the property. The grounds include an amphitheater used for private concerts and events, private tasting areas for wine club members, and a cellar below the tasting room (available for viewing only on guided tours).
The private tasting lounges available for wine club members are located just beyond the tasting room. Members also have priority access to small lot and library wines. Darioush offers flat rate shipping of $15-$20 depending on where you live. Members enjoy complimentary tastings, barrel tastings and property tours as well as invitations to private events, tastings and excursions featuring Darioush wine throughout the United States and around the world.
Napa Valley is home to world-class wine experiences, but few match Darioush. The architecture is striking, the wines are exquisite, and the hospitality is wonderful. Without question, Darioush should be at the top of your Napa Valley must-see list!
