The Review
Cross Timbers delivers perhaps the most unique winery experience Grapevine has to offer with a former owner named Patti still hanging around, beautiful landscaping, a historic home and great wines.
The Place:  At the far north end of Main Street and located in one of the oldest buildings in Grapevine, the Cross Timbers home is a wonderful example of Country Victorian. Built in 1875, it was originally part of 186 acre farm. The house itself has an interesting history and adds to the charm of the winery. The home is widely believed to be one of the oldest buildings in Grapevine. Today, only 2.5 acres remain, but owner and winemaker Don Bigbie has created a refreshing retreat of beautifully landscaped grounds, consisting of a 4,000 square foot red barn and a white covered gazebo, both of which are often used for weddings and special occasions. This offers an incredible change from the run-down home Don originally purchased without even telling his wife. To her surprise, one day after church, Don took her by the house and surprised her with the news that they were the new owners of the historic but dilapidated house. Now, beautifully restored, Dons vision that day has come to life.
The Experience:  When visiting Cross Timbers Winery you are taking a trip back to a simpler time. As you enter the little wood frame house you are greeted by Amy who is eager to assist you. The dark oak tasting bar, which was donated to the winery for the enjoyment of its visitors, is inviting or you can choose to wander around the house and admire the period lace and décor befit a southern family. Another option is to listen to the wind sweep through the trees from the front porch swing. Most visitors also take in the lovely grounds full of shade trees, giving a welcome relief from the Texas heat. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they delight in making your time here special. This place is cozy and you cant help but feel at home.
The Wines:  Don uses 100% Texas grapes grown on the Lubbock high plains to create some of the best wines Texas has to offer. For the tastings you receive 4 pours for $5. They offer a quality red blend for $13 or go for a superb white in their 2011 Viognier for $25. Several other wines from their Cabernet and Merlot to Sangiovese are available as well and all provide good value.
Insiders Tip:  As the only haunted winery in Grapevine, Cross Timbers offers an interesting twist to the usual wine tasting experience. Some employees and visitors have reported being touched by Patty. Others have seen cabinet doors open on their own and window shades roll up without assistance. If you are interested in a wine tasting adventure with a spooky twist, Cross Timbers is the winery for you. Cross Timbers also offers 10% off a 6 bottle purchase and 15% of of any purchases of 12 or more bottles.
