Topel Winery
Historic farmstead with hillside vineyard views
Best known for: Handcrafted wines from estate vineyard
Nestled at 1,400 feet elevation in Mendocino County’s Sanel Valley, Topel Winery and Estate Vineyard has a long history dating back to the late 1980s. It all started when the Topel family discovered that their old sheep farm had real potential for grape growing.
Covering 160 acres of pristine land, only about 15 acres are dedicated to Vitis vinifera grapes. The focus is on premium varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. The winery’s unique Maymen-Etsel-Snook complex soils help produce exceptional quality grapes, which tend to be small and concentrated, giving them remarkable color and flavor.
The winery takes a very hands-on approach to farming, with meticulous attention to each vine. Under the guidance of winemaker Martin Bernal-Hafner, Topel Winery continues to craft wines that are elegantly complex and true to their terroir.
