South River Vineyards

Historic church setting with scenic vineyard walks

Best known for: Old world selections suited for cooler climates

South River Vineyard, often called the 'church winery', is housed in a century-old church that originally stood in Shalersville, Ohio.

Founded in 2002, this small boutique winery has become a peaceful and unique spot for wine lovers. It is known as one of the largest growers of vineifera in the Grand River Valley AVA, focusing on old world styles that do well in cooler climates.

The winery’s history is quite interesting, with its owner, Gene Sigel, moving the church to Geneva. Visitors can enjoy the scenic grounds, walk through the vineyards, and relax on the veranda or by the outdoor fireplace.

South River Vineyard also features a wine cave built from precast highway culverts, used for storing and aging wine.

It’s conveniently located just 50 miles east of Cleveland and not far from Geneva-on-the-Lake, making it a popular stop for wine enthusiasts in the area.
