Rove Winery at the Gallagher Estate

Rove Winery at the Gallagher Estate is a family farm winery in Traverse City, Michigan, built on a fifth-generation farm with deep cherry-growing roots. It opens in 2016, but the agricultural story here runs much older: Creighton Gallagher grows up working the family farm before returning to it with McKenzie Gallagher and replanting part of the property to grapes. Today the estate grows 12 vinifera varieties, including five reds, with a clear farm-first focus and a strong preference for estate fruit.

The setting is the headline for many visitors, and fairly so. Rove sits at 1,165 feet on the Leelanau Peninsula’s highest point, with broad views over the peninsula and toward Sleeping Bear Dunes. That elevation is not just scenery; it shapes the wines through southern exposure, abundant sunlight, and cool-air drainage that helps protect against frost. Winemaker Wes Mateusiak, who has been making wine in northern Michigan since 2015, works lot by lot and keeps the approach restrained enough to let site show through. The range covers red, white, and rosé wines along with cider, with rosés made by the saignée method and cider available only in the tasting room.

For travelers, Rove feels more like a destination stop than a quick pour-and-go tasting room. Guests can order four-pour wine or cider flights for $20, settle in with local small plates, and catch live music on the patio. Families and dogs are welcome outside, and for visitors who want more than a casual flight, the winery also offers guided tasting and vineyard experiences by reservation.
