Remotion

Small-lot Rogue Valley wines with a tasting room in Jacksonville, Oregon’s 1880 Orth House

Best known for: Small-lot wines from Rogue Valley grapes

Remotion pairs small-lot Rogue Valley wines with a tasting room inside the historic Orth House in Jacksonville, Oregon. Ben and Lori Grable are the people behind the winery, which begins its commercial life with the 2018 harvest. The focus is wine made from local growers’ grapes, with a downtown tasting room rather than a vineyard destination.

The Grables’ winemaking story starts in Pennsylvania in 2004 with a secondhand iron wine press so heavy it takes four people to move. Winemaker Frank Mellon of Freeport helps guide their early efforts, and eight harvests of basement winemaking with California grapes build the foundation. Italian families who make wine across generations help spark their interest in Italian varieties. Ben’s training includes the University of California, Davis oenology and viticulture certificate program, which he completes in 2017.

At 105 W. Main Street, the tasting room offers flights, glasses and bottles, with indoor and outdoor table seating and small plates alongside the wines. Italian sodas and children’s snacks give non-wine drinkers something beyond water. The Orth House, dating to 1880, also houses three guest suites—a useful option for travelers who prefer their tasting room within walking distance of their bed.
