Chalone Vineyard

Historic vineyard with mountain views and a rich legacy

Best known for: Burgundian-styled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Chalone Vineyard, established in 1919, is celebrated as the oldest producing vineyard in Monterey County.

Nestled in the Gavilan Mountain range, the vineyard is distinguished by its unique limestone-based soils, similar to those found in Burgundy. This terroir, combined with a dramatic climate influenced by the nearby Pacific Ocean, creates ideal conditions for producing wines with pronounced varietal character.

Chalone Vineyard gained international recognition when its Chardonnay placed third in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Today, the vineyard focuses on crafting Burgundian-styled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, along with limited amounts of Pinot Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Syrah.

Visitors can explore these wines at the new tasting room in Carmel-by-the-Sea, which offers curated experiences like wine and cheese pairings.
