Carlson Vineyards
Sustainable practices in a scenic mountain setting
Best known for: Easy-drinking Colorado wines and fruit wines
Carlson Vineyards is one of the established names in Palisade, Colorado wine, with roots that go back to 1981, when founders Parker and Mary Carlson planted four acres on East Orchard Mesa above town. The winery itself followed in 1988 in a 1930s fruit packing shed, and that origin story still fits the place: practical, local, and not especially interested in making wine feel complicated. Owner and winemaker Garrett Portra, who joined in 2011 and bought the winery in 2015, has kept that tone intact while building on Carlson’s reputation as one of Colorado’s most recognized long-running producers.
The range is broad in a way that makes sense for Palisade. Carlson works with locally grown wine grapes and fruit from Palisade and Delta County, turning out reds like Merlot, Tempranillo, Tyrannosaurus Red, Exodus, and Calico alongside Riesling, Gewürztraminer, rosé, orange wine, and a set of fruit wines that lean into the orchard country around it. Peach, Tree Ripe White, and Tree Ripe Blush are the sort of bottles that tell you exactly where you are. Visiting is refreshingly straightforward: the Palisade winery and tasting room is open daily, reservations are not required, and there is also a downtown Grand Junction tasting room for travelers who want a lower-commitment stop. Groups of up to six fit most easily. For visitors who like wineries with a little personality, Carlson also ties its Wren Quinn series to monthly community giving, a detail that makes the place feel rooted rather than merely busy.
Tasting Hours
