Bretz Wildlife Lodge and Winery

South African-themed Southern Illinois winery and lodge near Carlyle Lake with house wines, dining, and event space

Best known for: Chambourcin-based reds and sweet to semi-dry house wines

Bretz Wildlife Lodge and Winery sits just north of Carlyle in Southern Illinois, about two miles from Carlyle Lake, and it leans hard into its lodge identity. Opened in 2008, the place grew from Sandy Bretz’s original plan for a small winery and tasting room into a much bigger operation with a full restaurant, full bar, live entertainment, sand volleyball, and sizable event facilities. The South Africa influence is the through-line: African wildlife mounts shape the decor, the wine names follow the theme, and spaces like the Kudu Room, Kalahari Hall, and Serengeti Sunroom make it feel more like a destination roadhouse-lodge than a quiet vineyard stop.

The wine list is built for broad appeal rather than niche wine-geek bragging rights. Chambourcin does a lot of the work here, showing up in the dry Safari Red, the semi-sweet Kudu Red, and the blush Kalahari Sunset with Vidal. Other bottles run from Concord-based sweet reds and blushes to Chardonel, Vidal, Riesling, Villard, and Niagara-based whites, plus fruit wines produced in-house. Tasting in the Kudu Room is complimentary, which lowers the stakes nicely for casual visitors. This is a good pick for groups that want more than a tasting flight: lunch or dinner on the patio, a glass at sunset, maybe live music, and enough room options to handle anything from an easy weekend stop to a wedding-sized gathering.
