Antietam Creek Vineyards
Historic battlefield-adjacent winery with rustic charm
Best known for: Estate-grown and estate-produced wines
Antietam Creek Vineyards is located next to the historic Antietam National Battlefield. The winery started in 2010, transforming an abandoned 55-acre dairy farm into a working vineyard.
After acquiring the land, the owners carefully prepared the soil, tested microclimates, and built a deer fence to protect the vines. By 2011, they had planted their first 4.5 acres of vines.
The region is well known for its limestone, or karst, formations. These soils help keep the pH at a steady 7.0, which gives the wines a distinct sense of place, or 'terroir.'
By 2015, after the vines had reached full production, the owners partnered with local artisans to convert a century-old barn into a tasting room. They preserved the barn’s rustic charm and added modern winemaking technology to the limestone cellar.
Today, Antietam Creek Vineyards has a complete estate wine production facility and a tasting room. They focus on estate-grown and estate-produced wines.
The vineyard is also rich in history, located near the site of the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single-day battle in U.S. history.
The owners, George Warmenhoven and Joan Larrea, are actively involved in the winery’s operations, making sure every aspect reflects their dedication to quality winemaking.
