Upper Cumberland Wine Trail
The Upper Cumberland Wine Trail connects wineries across Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland region. Explore small towns and back roads on a day trip or a weekend of wine tasting.
The Upper Cumberland Wine Trail is a self-guided winery route through Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland region, linking small-town tasting rooms and vineyard properties across a broad stretch of countryside. This is a driving trip, not a walkable tasting district: the back roads are part of the appeal, but trying to cover the whole trail in a day misses the point.
How to plan your tasting route
The trail reaches from Brush Creek and Lafayette to communities including Baxter, Sparta, Livingston, Jamestown and Crossville. Plan on two or three winery visits in a day, choosing a geographic cluster rather than crisscrossing the region. Leave room for lunch and time to linger over a tasting. A weekend gives you more flexibility to explore different parts of the trail without making every afternoon a race against closing time.
Cookeville makes a practical base for exploring the central part of the region, including nearby Baxter, while Crossville suits a trip focused farther east. Choose your overnight town after mapping the wineries you most want to visit. Arrange a designated driver, and don’t assume transportation will be available on demand at rural properties.
Expect variety rather than a single house style. Wine lists across the trail include dry reds and whites alongside sweeter wines, muscadine wines and fruit wines. You don’t need to know the grape names before arriving; tell the tasting-room staff what you usually enjoy and whether you prefer dry or sweet.
When to go and what to check
For a trip built around back-road scenery and time outdoors, spring or fall is a sensible choice. Winery activities take place throughout the year, with listings that include wine pairings, live concerts, dance nights and train excursions. Check current schedules before building a visit around an event, and confirm whether separate tickets or reservations are required.
Verify each winery’s hours before setting out. Some rural stops specifically ask visitors to call ahead. Read the winery’s own driving directions as well as checking your map; an entrance may involve residential roads where slow driving matters.
Collect stamps as you explore
Pick up a Wine Trail Rack Card at participating wineries or visitor centers and collect a stamp at each winery you visit. Completing the trail earns a thank-you gift, and you can begin and finish at any winery. Treat the card as a reason to return, not a reason to squeeze another tasting into an already full day.
